Fifth Grade Families,

Here we are at the end of fifth grade…  Your child is a little bit older, a little bit taller, and a whole lot smarter!  It has been my pleasure and privilege to watch their character, personality, and intellect develop day-by-day.  They are some really amazing young people!

Throughout the year we learned new things together.  This year we have lived, studied, learned, laughed, sang, and grown together.  We have become a classroom family and will always have a bond with one another.

I would love to hear about the exciting things that your child is up to in the future.  Please don’t hesitate to keep in touch to share their exciting moments! Wherever they go, whatever they may do, and whoever they become, I look forward to the day when I hear their name linked with whatever their accomplishments may be.  I also cannot wait to watch them walk back down the hallways of their elementary school in their caps and gowns as Arno graduates in 2026!

Last Minute Information!

I cannot believe that we are in the final countdown of days this year.  It really seems like just a few days have passed since your children entered my fifth grade classroom in September!!!

Movie Day

On Friday in the afternoon, we will be watching a movie in class.  Students are welcome to bring in an extra snack and drink to have during the movie!  Please keep all snack Peanut/Tree nut Free since we will be eating them in the classroom!

Monday – The Last Full Day

This will be the last day that students will be bringing their backpacks to school.  We have cleaned out the majority of the books from our desks and cubbies.  So Monday will be the last day for bringing backpacks to school.

Fifth Grade Celebration

The Fifth grade celebration ceremony will be on Wednesday Morning in the gym at Arno.  It will begin at 9:00, a.m., on Wednesday June 12.  The ceremony will last approximately 1 hour.   There will be a brunch for the students following the ceremony.  While parents and other family members are welcome to come to the ceremony, the brunch will be STUDENTS ONLY due to limited space in the cafeteria.

Last Day Clap-out

On the last day, the 5th graders are applauded by the rest of the Arno students as they exit the school!  The clap out will be Thursday, June 11.  The fifth graders will exit through the main office doors a few minutes early, maybe around 11:15-20ish.  Parents may gather by those doors for last day photo opportunities as they meet their students who will exit the building for the last time as Arno students.  The rest of the Arno students will be lining the hallways on the inside of the building, so parents will have to wait outside the building.

Middle School Orientation

Last Thursday, May 16 the guidance counselors from Allen Park Middle School came to Arno to meet with the fifth graders.  They spoke with the students about the different expectations for next year, and be able to answer some questions that the students may have.  Last week the students brought home information from this presentation in their Friday Folder.  You will find the following information:

1.  Summer Book Report Packet: All students are expected to read two books and complete 2 book reports over the summer.  The guidelines are explained on the blue pieces of paper.  The book reports will be due the first Friday of 6th grade, and will be part of their Language Arts Grade!  I have also decided to send home one more Scholastic Book Order if you would like to order books for your child to use to complete this Middle School assignment.  This is also in your child’s Friday Folder.
2.  Health Form:  The green health form will need to be filled out and returned to the school. Additional copies are available on the website if you need it.
3.  Information about how to use a combination lock:  Students will need to be able to open a standard combination lock for their lockers.  The locks on the lockers are permanent, but they may need their own lock for their gym locker if they take Phys. Ed.

Fifth Grade Celebration

Our 5th Grade Celebration will be on Wednesday June 12, from 9:00-11:00.  After the awards ceremony there will be a brunch for the students.  To help offset the costs for the food, decorations, and 5th grade gift, we are asking that the students bring in a $1.00-$5.00 donation.  You can have your child bring this in to their teacher by May 31.

Reproductive Health

We are beginning this unit this week.  Permission Slips came home last week.  They were due this week.  Please let me know if you have any questions.

We have a representative coming to speak with the students about economics.  Mr. Paul will come in on Thursdays for a 5-week course for Junior Achievement.

As we are getting closer to the end of the year, student behavior in general is getting a little relaxed.  Currently, I have had conversations (with the whole group, and individuals),  and I have even given some warnings.  In my experience, behaviors will  only get worse as the school year draws closer to the end.  So please be sure to speak with your child about the importance of being respectful, responsible and safe at school.

We have finished the M-Step!

In May, we will be wrapping up more end of the year testing with the NWEA and the BAS Reading Assessment!  Please continue to encourage your child to try their best each day at school!

The time is here!!

We will be having a 5th grade celebration parent meeting on Thursday, May 16, at 6:30 in the cafeteria.  The celebration will be held on Wednesday, June 12th at 9am.  Immediately following the award ceremony, the students will enjoy a student only brunch in the cafeteria.

This meeting will be to discuss decorations for the gym and cafeteria and food for the brunch.  Please let me know if you have any questions.

Testing can be daunting, and tiresome, so I do try to limit the amount of homework that is coming home.  Please note, that this test does not define your child as a student.  I see the effort they put into school each day, and I know what they are capable of.  I don’t want them to stress about the test, or have any sort of anxiety, but I DO expect that they put forth their very best effort and give it their best work!

We have begun our Spring testing with the M-Step.  Please be sure that your child arrives to school on time, and has a good night sleep and healthy breakfast.

Testing can be daunting, and tiresome, so I do try to limit the amount of homework that is coming home.  Please note, that this test does not define your child as a student.  I see the effort they put into school each day, and I know what they are capable of.  I don’t want them to stress about the test, or have any sort of anxiety, but I DO expect that they put forth thier very best effort and give it their best work!

M-Step Vocabulary Practice Continues!

Thank you for your help and support with the M-Step Vocabulary.  Students have been doing a nice job studying and reviewing the weekly vocabulary words.  Please continue to work with your students.  This week will be the last quiz.

Many students are not completing the wordsearch that comes with each list of definitions.  This wordsearch is worth 1 extra credit point on the quix, and helps the students study.  Please encourage your child to complete this activity.

Students received the Week #12 words today.  The quiz will be on Friday 4/12/19

Week #12 Words:

M-Step Homework Practice Continues

The Sixth and Final homework packet came home before break.  It will be due on Thursday, April 11!  The packet is intended to help students prepare for the M-Step test that will be happening in April.  Please be sure to look over this with your child.  Students receive credit for completion.  Be sure to work with your child at home to complete the practice activities.

Garden Club

Notes came home regarding the Gardening club today.

Beginning April 15, Carden Club will be meeting in the Courtyard on Monday (3:35-4:30)  We invite all 3rd-5th graders and their families to join us in establishing and sustaining a beautiful courtyard.  The courtyard will include Michigan Native plants, an outdoor classroom, and salad gardens.

Please sign up through the Sign-Up Genius Link by Friday April 12, 2019.  We are limited to 30 members.  Enrollment will be on a first-come basis.  A $5.00 donation per student is appreciated to help cover the cost of supplies.

There isn’t much to report this week, as we will spend most of the week at Camp.  The following information was sent out last week:

 On Tuesday, March 26th – Thursday, March 28 Arno, Bennie and Lindemann students will be attending YMCA Camp Storer. The following information will tell you where to meet, what time to be there, and what time your child will be returning from camp.

 

Time to be at departure site: 9:00 am on Tuesday, March 26th

Where the departure site is: Sears parking lot on Southfield in Lincoln Park.

Please be dressed for the weather. Do not pack your boots, hats, gloves if it is cold. You should be dressed to be outside when you get on the bus.

Please pack your bedding and pillow in the plastic bag that we are providing. It is color coded for your school. Make sure you can lift your own suitcase, because everyone will be responsible for transporting their own items to and from their own cabins.  Luggage with wheels is not recommended as you will be trying to wheel them over grass or mud

or snow.

Please do not pack any medication in your suitcase. Put any medication (in original containers with names on them) in a clear Ziploc bag. Put your name and school on the bag with permanent marker.. It will be collected prior to getting on the bus, and will be returned to you when you return from camp.

Return from camp: We will return at approximately 1:45 – 2:00.  You will meet your child at your home school. Luggage will be delivered to the school and should arrive either with the students, or prior to students returning home. You will have to pick up your child’s medication from the office before you leave the school on Thursday.

We also had an assembly with Mr. Peace.  He shared motivational messages to encourage the students to keep trying, even when things are difficult!

On Friday, a former student of mine came to read to our class.  She is in school for elementary education.  The students enjoyed her visit!
